My journey to becoming an acupuncturist began when I developed repetitive motion injuries while working as a professional musician. During the time that I had to stop performing, I did everything I could think of to make the pain go away. While some therapies such as massage, stretching, Alexander Technique, anti-inflammatories, and physical therapy helped, it wasn't until I started acupuncture treatment that I began to heal. Even though I was skeptical and uncomfortable with the thought of someone sticking me with needles, I was desperate to feel better.
What I experienced through acupuncture treatment was completely unexpected. Over the course of several sessions, I began to notice not only less physical pain, but a whole shift in my emotional and mental state. I was feeling happier, calmer, and less stressed in all areas of my life. Other physical symptoms, for which I wasn't necessarily seeking treatment, began to change for the better as well. It was if I was healing from the inside out and the outside in, and the meaning of the term holistic medicine was suddenly clear. I felt strongly that I was meant to share the many benefits of acupuncture with others, and excitedly headed off to begin my training at Tai Sophia Institute for the Healing Arts in Laurel, MD. If you are interested in reading about why I began blogging, my initial post is here.
